HIID – Week 2 – Introduction to Socio-Systemic Thinking – Reading and Reflection Tasks

Readings and Reflection Tasks:

After each reading, you will find questions to reflect upon. Please capture your thoughts in your personal journal.

1. Read Peter Joseph’s “System’s Bound Realizing Relationships.”

Answer the following reflection questions in your personal journal: What can you identify as some key aspects of Peter Joseph’s example of socio-systemic thinking? How could socio-systemic thinking enhance how you are thinking about and addressing as your ‘key issue’? What are the interrelationships and structures that surround your key issue/what you want to explore?

2. Read Paul Farmer’s “On Suffering and Structural Violence.”

Answer the following reflection questions in your personal journal: Can you identify the structural phenomena and even violence in your life? How can insights from structural violence and realizing relationships help you be more effective in addressing your key issue?

If you are taking in our Live Virtual Classroom, you will discuss this question in your next class session or in your online student discussion forum. If you are taking in Internal Online Independent Study Mode, please capture the question and your answer in a single document called your Reflection Journal that you will upload for grading at the end of the course with your Final Creative Assignment. If you are taking in Audit-No Credit, or Lite Mode you can conduct this exercise for yourself or simply move ahead to the next lesson.
